Overview

As an illustrator of Andalusian descent, I seek to honor my ancestors while celebrating the Caribbean roots that define my daily life. Influenced by the memories of my lineage, this piece pays tribute to the traditions and mutual respect shared by both nations in this historic cultural event. To win the proposal, the piece had to do more than look beautiful; it had to feel historic. The challenge was to integrate the star of the Puerto Rican flag and the Spanish colors into the bailaora’s attire (el mantón) so naturally that they felt like a single identity. I had to balance the silhouette of the Osborne Bull with the lush mountains of Puerto Rico and the architecture of the Casa de España, ensuring both cultures were treated with equal reverence. A winning vision for a historic first: The debut poster for Puerto Rico’s inaugural Feria de Sevilla.

The Challenge

Created in celebration of Día de Andalucía, this piece is a deeply personal tribute to my Andalusian lineage and the enduring memory of my grandmother, Pepita. It is a visual bridge between two worlds, exploring the cultural threads that weave my family’s history together across the ocean.

The Process

By weaving together symbolic imagery, such as the iconic Osborne bull, the architectural silhouette of Casa de España, and a central figure adorned with both a traditional Spanish fan and a tropical hibiscus, the composition visualizes a heritage that exists across oceans. This artistic journey concludes with a community-focused production phase, where the hand-drawn stippling and bold primary colors are translated into 11x17 inch prints, allowing the story of my family’s roots to be shared and held in hand.
